Hollywood Cemetery River Cleanup

Location:

Since spring 2026, the Georgia Tech Archaeology Program has been documenting the monuments and ecological diversity in Hollywood Cemetery, a longtime abandoned cemetery in West Atlanta. Today, the cemetery represents an important ecological habitat and part of the Chattahoochee watershed, while remaining important to the descendants of the people buried there. We are working to help the cemetery to balance priorities as we collaborate on a plan for the future of the land. As part of this community-engaged project, we are co-hosting a cleanup of the cemetery wetland and Cowboy Creek, which runs through the cemetery, with Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and Devine GA.

We would love for you to join us as we support the biodiversity of this section of old-growth forest, which is habitat to many native species of plants and animals. This is also an opportunity to learn more about heritage management and city planning in the city of Atlanta, and to build relationships with others in the Georgia Tech and Atlanta community. We hope to see you there!
