Application Requirements

To apply to the M.S. in History and Sociology of Technology and Science or Ph.D. in the History and Sociology of Technology and Science, please submit:

  • Official transcripts for all universities attended
  • TOEFL scores for international students (see score requirements here)
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Writing Sample
  • Three letters of recommendation

Your statement of purpose is an intellectual biography. It should specify whether you’re applying for the M.S. or Ph.D., your reasons for applying, your interest in the academic topics, and your career plans after receiving the degree.

You can submit your application on the Georgia Tech Graduate Admissions website and check its status throughout the process. Visit the application instructions page for more detailed information.

Please note: We encourage international students to submit their application at least one month before the deadline to ensure sufficient time to accept and process the supporting documentation for their application.

Choosing a Program

If you intend to pursue a Ph.D., please apply for the Ph.D. program, whether or not you already have a master’s degree. All students in the Ph.D. program acquire a master’s degree along the way.

This typically involves a three-semester course of studies, though highly motivated students or those with advanced standing may complete the degree in a calendar year. Students who are interested in only the master's program and those who are uncertain if they would like to continue on to the Ph.D. should apply to the master’s program.

Tuition and Financial Support

Georgia Tech is ranked as the #1 Best Value Public University in the U.S. When adjusted for inflation, tuition for in-state, out-of-state, and international students is lower than it was five years ago.

For an up-to-date list of fees and tuition, please visit the Office of the Bursar. International students should refer to the Office of International Education for the estimated cost of attendance that must be demonstrated to be eligible for an immigration form I-20 or DS-2019 to be issued.

You can also find financial support and scholarship resources via the Georgia Tech Financial Aid Office and the Georgia Tech Office of Graduate Studies.

Ph.D. Funding

All full-time Ph.D. students receive funding packages with a stipend and tuition waiver. These come in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and research grants and fellowships.

Teaching and research assistantships include tuition remission and a base stipend of $10,310 per term for approximately 13 hours a week of work. In some cases, students work an additional seven hours per week and receive an additional stipend or three hours of course credit.

In addition, a select number of entering students receive fellowships that increase their level of financial support beyond the base stipend. The terms and conditions of these fellowships vary. Some supplement assistantships, while others release students from assistantship duties for one or more years.

Doctoral students in the School of History and Sociology have received research assistantships, grants, and fellowships from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, Sloan Foundation, Sloan Center for Paper Business and Industry Studies, Georgia Public Television, Humboldt Foundation, Georgia Humanities Council, IEEE, Chemical Heritage Foundation, Hagley Museum and Library, and AAAS/RAND. The graduate director and your dissertation advisor can provide valuable advice about possible research funding.

The School of History and Sociology also offers fellowship support for student travel and research. Students may also receive summer funding through teaching assistantship positions that pay at least $2,500.
