Candace Swint Bethea

1. What do you do?

As the director of family services at Henry County Schools, I lead enrollment and registration for over 42,000 students. As a part of the district leadership team, I'm responsible for executing our community-inspired strategic plan.

2. What’s the coolest part of your job?

The coolest part of my job is interacting with new families and providing support to schools.

3. Why are you passionate about it?

I adore education and how education changes lives. Education provides avenues for students that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.

4. Which skills from your IAC degree have helped you be successful in this career?

Sociology has been the most impactful because I have been working with people for over 23 years. Education is one of the largest industries with human social relationships. I taught social studies for years, too. Dr. Douglas Flamming, Dr. Lawrence Foster, Dr. Eleanor Alexander, Dr. Gregory Nobles, Dr. John Tone, Dr. Ivy Kennelly (Ivy Ken), and Dr. Alexandria Tone all influenced my teaching style. As a non-traditional teacher, I leaned heavily on their pedagogy.

5. What’s your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?

Don’t be afraid of choosing a career in education! There are many roles, and our students need you!
