The Possibilities of Podcasting and Digital Audio for Sport Studies Research
Join us for a webinar presented by the Sound, Sport, and the Digital working group on Friday, Oct. 25, from 1 – 2:30 pm EST.
This online event will explore how podcasting and digital audio can be used in research on sports and movement cultures and expand disciplinary knowledge of the podcast medium as a mode of communication and research tool.
The webinar will begin with opening remarks from Mary McDonald and Matt Ventresca (Georgia Tech) and feature presentations by Samuel M. Clevenger (Towson University) and Robyn Smith (Loughborough University). It will be moderated by Marta Mack (University of Kentucky).
Clevenger and Smith will discuss how podcasting and digital audio can be incorporated into research praxis as:
- A vehicle for public-facing dissemination of research-informed knowledge
- A mode for representing experiences of sport and movement
- An arts-based or participatory research method
The presentations will also reflect on the cultural politics of podcasting, with attention to the social divisions that shape access to podcast production and the contested ideological function of podcasts within and beyond sports. We will conclude with audience questions and further conversations about podcasting’s potential within sports studies.
This online event is open to all researchers, artists, and practitioners interested in how podcasts can enhance scholarship, teaching, and knowledge mobilization practices. We welcome those new to podcasts and podcasting as well as more experienced podcast consumers and producers.
